Dr Mark Chimes

Chief Veterinarian

Dr Mark Chimes is qualified as a veterinarian at the University of Pretoria in 1962. For the past 10 years he has been acting as veterinary advisor and conducting dairy parlour audits for the Dairy Standard Agency of South Africa. In 2022 he was appointed as the Chief Veterinary Officer for Milk South Africa to manage the Animal Health and Welfare Programme. As chairman of the Controlled Diseases Steering Committee, he was appointed as an advisor to the Ministerial Task Team on Controlled Diseases. For the past 18 months the Task Team has focused all their attention on bringing the current outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in the country, under control. He also represents South Africa on the IDF Standing Committee for Animal Health and Welfare and is a member of the IDF Action Team for Guidelines on the application of WOAH Terrestrial Animal Health Code to dairy processing and export trade in relation to Foot and Mouth Disease Virus.
