Joe Vernon

Farmer

Joe Vernon grew up on his family farm before earning a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and spending five years in international motorsport. He subsequently served as a Royal Engineer Officer in the British Army before returning to Cornwall to establish a grass-based dairy farm, combining his engineering expertise with the practical realities of day-to-day farming.
Joe is currently a Nuffield Farming Scholar, researching how artificial intelligence can become a practical decision-support tool for dairy farmers. His study focuses on transforming the vast amounts of data already collected on farms into useful, actionable insights that help farmers make better decisions, improve efficiency, and support the people working on farm. Through visits to farmers, researchers, and technology companies around the world, he is exploring how AI can bridge the gap between emerging technologies and practical on-farm adoption.
His interests lie at the intersection of engineering, data systems, and agriculture. He is particularly focused on identifying technologies that are already available or close to market and demonstrating how they can deliver measurable value to dairy farmers.
