Prof Joseph Liow

Dean and Wang Gungwu Professor in East Asian Affairs

Joseph Liow is currently Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, where he is also Wang Gungwu Professor in East Asian Affairs. He is concurrently Chairman of the Middle East Institute. Joseph was formerly Dean at the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and of the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, at the Nanyang Technological University, and also Chairman of the Confucius Institute. He is a frequent commentator on geopolitics and global affairs in national and international media, and his comments have appeared in the Washington Post, New York Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, Nikkei Asian Review, and South China Morning Post, and he consults frequently for MNCs. Joseph has also authored or edited more than 18 books, the latest of which are Navigating Uncertainty: Our Region in an Age of Flux (World Scientific Press, 2024), Islam and Political Power in Indonesia and Malaysia: The Role of Tarbiyah and Dakwah in the Evolution of Islamism (Cambridge University Press, 2022), and Dictionary of the Modern Politics of Southeast Asia (Routledge, 2022).
